Computer Jobs in Yerushalayim

A month before our recent pilot trip I had sent a query to an Internet mailing list that I frequent asking if anyone could give us some advice on communities. During my ensuing conversation with RSM he said that while he did not have too much info for me about communities, he might be able to help me more in the employment area. So I arranged to meet RSM one afternoon in Yerushalayim to get a tour of Hi-Tech Yerushalayim.

One thing that most people agree on when it comes to computer jobs in Israel is that most of the jobs are in the Tel Aviv-Ra’anana-Haifa areas. And therefore, for one looking for a computer job in Israel it would be best to make your home to be somewhere that is commutable to those areas. However, since our hearts are really in Yerushalayim (that’s for another post) and the community that we like the most is also located to the North of Yerushalayim (also for another post) any news that I can get about computer jobs in the Jerusalem area is just wonderful.

So I set out with RSM to see the Har Hotzvim Industrial Park.

RSM said that he had worked in Har Hotzvim about ten years ago. At that time, he said, there were three or four companies that were located there (including Intel). In the intervening time there has been lots of expansion. Now there are literally dozens of companies that have facilities at Har Hotzvim. Several of these companies have been successful enough there that they needed to expand into multiple large buildings. Har Hotzvim A was established in the 70s. Area B came in the 90s. Area C is under development now and D is planned for the future.

Of course, Tel Aviv-Ra’anana is still the place to be for computers. But it was great to see that Yerushalayim is not the Hi-Tech wasteland that everyone had described it to be.

[...] To be fair, Neve Daniel does may a slightly better location than Kochav Yaakov. Both are about the same distance from Yerushalayim (10-15 minutes). Neve Daniel is to the south, which places it in closer proximity to the new train station which will God-willing be featuring high-speed trains to the Tel Aviv area. It is also in close proximity to the other communities in Gush Etzion (like Efrat and Alon Shevut) with all that they have to offer. Kochav Yaakov is to the north, placing it closer to the Har Hotzvim hi-tech industrial park. However, current political projections are that Neve Daniel (and the rest of the Gush Etzion area) are to be included within the security fence. Kochav Yaakov will not. Though as we all know, that can change tomorrow (and for some people, may make Kochav Yaakov more attractive). [...]
