I’m tired. But I told myself that I would do it, so…gosh darnit…(2 halachot for today, 2 for yesterday)
9) One is forbidden (from the Torah) to eat or derive any benefit from Chametz from midday on Erev Pesach (the fourteenth of Nissan). To help people avoid messing up, Chazal added two hours onto this. So the rule is that one is forbidden to eat chametz after the beginning of the fifth hour of the day, and one is forbidden to get any benefit from the beginning of the sixth hour of the day. (443:1). Check your local listings to find out the times in your area.
10) Bi’ur Chametz ideally takes place sometime during the fifth halachic hour of the day on Erev Pesach (MB 445:6), though it can really be done any time after the search for chametz has been completed (445:1, Rema there). When doing the bi’ur, be sure to recite the nullification of chametz that is written in siddurim (and if you don’t understand the language, say it in English).
11) There are different opinions about how to do bi’ur chametz: burn it in a fire, crumble it up and throw it into the wind or throw it into the sea (445:1). The custom of Ashkenazim is to burn it (Rema there). Be sure to do this (and the nullification) before the beginning of the sixth halachic hour of the day on Erev Pesach.
12) If you happen to find chametz during pesach (446:1):
- If it is during chol hamo’ed, burn it right away
- If it is on Yom Tov, cover it with some kind of utensil until after Yom Tov. Then burn it.
G’night…
